She is a German-Italian writer of Polish-Jewish origin. She was born in Munich, but moved to Italy more than 35 years ago. Her debut, Ins Freie, a book of poetry, was published by Suhrkamp, Frankfurt, in 1989. in Italian. Her widely acclaimed and largely translated works in Italian include Lezioni di tenebra, Cibo, Le rondini di Montecassino (Zaskólki z Monte Cassino) and La ragazza con la Leica, - now published in Polish as Fotografka - the bestselling winner of “Premio Strega”, Italy’s most prestigious literary prize, in 2018.
She lives in Gallarate, Lombardy.
